When you’re talking about Germany as a wine region, one often tends only to talk about “Riesling” and mainly about the Riesling, which is produced in the most famous wine-growing region along the Rhine river. Even though Germany has 13 different wine regions where excellent wines are produced with local grapevines, which are in no way inferior than Riesling!
These include the following regions: Ahr, Baden, Franken, Hessische Bergstrasse, Mittelrhein, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Nahe, Pfalz, Rheingau, Rheinhessen, Saale-Unstrut, Sachsen, Württemberg. One of the characteristics that share almost every region is to develop along rivers and tributaries, where the micro-climate favors the growth of the grapevines.
But what types of white wine we find almost everywhere in Germany? Among the most famous belong Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Silvaner.
And what can we say about red wine? Germany only has a very modest production of red wine that in most cases regarding their distribution do not exceed the national border, but were served in local restaurants.
The most commonly used red wine varieties include Pinot Noir, Dornfelder and Portuguese. In general they are very fruity and fresh wines which were matured in wood for a short time and drunk young. The most appropriate area of cultivation for red wine is surely located around the river “Ahr”.
